The curious arithmetic of optical vortices.
The superposition of noncoaxial light beams containing screw wave-front dislocations is shown to create light patterns with a richer vortex content than that given by the arithmetic of the topological charges of the individual beams. We report the experimental observation of this phenomenon.
متن کاملQuorum sensing: the explanation of a curious phenomenon reveals a common characteristic of bacteria.
In the 1960s bacterial bioluminescence attracted increasing interest among microbiologists and biochemists. Plating seawater samples taken from virtually any place on the globe revealed the presence of bioluminescent bacteria, but at a rather low level of abundance, not more than a few cells per milliliter. A question frequently raised was what function the light emission might have in such “fr...
متن کاملLocal Likelihood Modeling of the Concept Drift Phenomenon
Temporal text data is often generated by a time-changing process or distribution. Such a drift in the underlying distribution cannot be captured by stationary likelihood techniques. We consider the application of local likelihood methods to generative and conditional modeling of temporal document sequences. We examine the asymptotic bias and variance and present an experimental study using the ...
متن کاملA curious instability phenomenon for a rounded corner in presence of a negative material
We study a 2D scalar harmonic wave transmission problem between a classical dielectric and a medium with a real-valued negative permittivity/permeability which models a metal at optical frequency or an ideal negative metamaterial. We highlight an unusual instability phenomenon for this problem when the interface between the two media presents a rounded corner. To establish this result, we provi...
متن کاملA New Demonstration of the Illusory Letters Phenomenon: Graphemic Restoration in Arabic Word Perception.
The illusory letters phenomenon (ILP) is a unique demonstration that words can be perceived as complete even when letters are physically absent. However, the ILP has only ever been reported for a Latinate language (English), and it is unknown whether the illusion occurs for alphabetic languages with fundamentally different visual properties. Here we report a demonstration of the ILP for Arabic ...
